Recently Phillips auctioned a rare Rolex Sea-Dweller original timepiece Ref.1665, which was sold at a high price: 70,8500 Swiss Francs. The earliest popular fake Rolex Sea-Dweller could date back to 1960s when Rolex cooperated with Comex and United States Army. In order to adapt to saturated deep sea diving, Rolex developed a new patented “helium escape valve” at the side of case on basis of Submariner Ref.5513, later the Ref.5514 was created especially for Comex. While the helium escape valve became the point to distinguish the Sea-Dweller from Submariner.
Referring to the helium escape valve, some people think it is high-technology which can automatically adjust the pressure of interior and exterior of the watch, avoiding the destroy to glass. In fact, the structure of the helium escape valve is very simple. A waterproof rubber ring, a short metal baton and a leaf spring have made up the device. With the development, Rolex copy watch with black dial is water resistant to a depth of 00 meter which is deeper than the Submariner which is to 200 meters. At that time, the Sea-Dweller was still belonging to Submariner.
The owner of the Ref.1665 sold this time was Robert Palmer Bradley, whose job was driving“Deepstar-4000” that was designed by Jacques Cousteau to dive in the area of US east coast and Caribbean, researching the marine geology and biology at that time. In November,1968, Rolex gave him the watch to commemorate the 500 times diving of Deepstar-4000. The engraved words on the caseback of the steel case knockoff watch were lost now.
